Fire

 Most fires are caused by carelessness, improper storage of flammable materials or the deliberate setting of fires.  Wherever you are, plan your safety before tragedy strikes.

 Prevent fires

 q       Keep storage areas free of trash.

 q       Store flammable liquids and gasoline in tight metal containers outside; do not use them indoors.

 q       Keep electrical appliances and wiring in good repair.  Don't overload circuits.

 q       Remember E D I T H.   Exit Drills In The Home!  Practice regularly.

 q       Discuss with your family step-by-step plans for an emergency fire escape and where the family will meet after the escape.

 q       Install a smoke detector for each level of your home and test them monthly.

 q       Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it.

 In case of fire

 q       To report fire or other emergencies, dial 911.

 q       Smother a small fire with wet rug, blanket or fire extinguisher.

 q       Turn off electricity and gas sources.

 q       Smother a grease fire with baking soda or salt or put a lid over the flame, if it is burning in the pan.

 q       Do not try to carry it outside.

 q       Get out if the fire is uncontrollable.  Close windows and doors behind you.  Do not go back inside once you are out.

 q       Meet your family at the designated place outside.

 q       Go to a neighbors house to report the fire.

 Forest or brush fire.

 q       Listen to your local radio or television.  Follow instructions.

 q       Be ready to leave the area immediately.

 q       Locate safe areas (lakes, rivers, etc.) in advance.

 q       Plan how and where to get in touch with family if separated.

 q       Remember to be extremely careful with the use of fire in the forest.  Wild fires kill animals and dstroy valuable timber and property.  Extinguish all campfires before leaving the area.
